If you’ve requested housing, many residential areas in the city of Berkeley have free street parking with no time limit from Friday evening until Sunday.

Need Housing?

Interested in coming but don’t know where to stay? Cal Q&A will be providing a limited amount of housing on a first-come first-serve basis. Be sure to mark that you need housing when you register online! We’ll contact you with further details. We do ask that each person requesting housing complete and individual registration form.

Who will I be staying with? Cal Q&A members and community volunteers will be generously offering up their private dorm rooms, apartments, houses, for conference attendees.

What will I need to bring? While each host volunteer will have their own specific things they can and can’t provide, it will be a good idea to bring a sleeping-bag, pillow, towels, and essentially anything that you will need to be self-sufficient throughout your stay.

Will you be providing meals? A free lunch will be provided at the conference on the day of, however we are not requesting our host volunteers to provide meals. Berkeley offers a wide range of restaurants with many offering quality affordable meals.

Categorically speaking, where do you fit? Which bubble do you circle? Which box do you scratch down a checkmark in? Mark one. Only one. Prioritize. The box confines. The box omits. The box silences. As nearly half a century of progress, activism, and change have demonstrated that “Asian” is obsolete—we are not one people, but many; we’ve garnered more boxes to choose from. But it is still a box. The box confines. The box omits. The box silences. We’ve reached an age of intersections. The “Asian” collides with the “Queer.” Decide. Are you the L, G, B, T, I, Q, Q, or A?

And if you mark a Q, what Q is it? In this age of intersections, the boxes multiply. The silences multiply. In the end, what story does the box tell? Behind every box there’s a story. What is yours? What is ours? Berkeley’s 1st Queer and Asian Conference will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008. The theme is Story-ing the Silence: Filling the Pages. This year’s conference is organized by the University of California, Berkeley’s student group Cal Q & A (Cal Queer & Asian). As we put a story to the silence, we hope this will be a day for community building and networking; a place to explore the intersections of our identity, and share our experiences, our stories as individuals; our stories as community. Together, let’s break through the compounded silences of Queer and Asian.
